About this tour
Munnar at 1,600m grows some of the finest tea in India, and this tour puts you inside the process rather than beside it. You start early, while the sun is still on the eastern ridges, and walk through a working estate while the pickers are still on the slopes. Our guide explains how the leaf is graded, and you get to taste several grades side by side.
Afterwards the trail continues to a spice garden — cardamom, pepper and cloves — and then to Top Station, where the road runs along the edge of the reserve and the view opens across three hill ranges on a clear morning. Lunch is at a family-run plantation kitchen.
Groups are capped at twelve, we leave by 07:30, and the whole day runs on one vehicle. Pick-up is included from Munnar town or any of the main hill-road hotels.
How the day runs
-
07:30 Pick-up from your hotel
Our vehicle collects you from your Munnar accommodation — town, Top Station or the main hill-road resorts. Anything outside Munnar is arranged on request.
-
08:30 Tea estate walk
Two hours inside a working estate. You follow the pickers on the terraces, see the withering sheds and the rolling room, and taste leaf straight from the factory.
-
11:00 Plantation lunch
A home-cooked meal at a family kitchen near the estates: rice, vegetable curry, parotta and a local fish curry, with tea refilled throughout.
-
13:00 Spice garden
A walk through cardamom, pepper and clove beds, with an explanation of how each is grown and harvested. You can buy directly from the growers.
-
14:30 Top Station viewpoint
The highest point on the road, where the view runs across three hill ranges. Plenty of time for photographs, plus an optional stop at an echo point on the way back.
-
16:30 Drop back at your hotel
Back at your door with the rest of the evening free. Tea bought earlier in the day can be packed for travel.
